When the Space Marines arrived to 4549-C, they encountered one of the most voracious lifeforms that they could ever face. Not only were they capable of infesting creatures from other planets, they had both an incredibly sticky web and a corrosive spit that could melt metals in an instant.

A series of circumstances - which are classified to this day - led to one of these creatures to board one of our colony ships, resulting in the decimation of entire colonies.

After the Federation put these colonies in quarantine, the inhabitants of these colonies knew they were doomed. They rushed to call their most brilliant scientists to find a way to neutralize the creatures' corrosive spit; It was known that the corrosive did not affect silicates, but enamel glass was a scarce and expensive resource.

The scientists found a compound to mitigate it, but the mitigation was barely affected unless one managed to dissolve it in copious amounts of water - another resource that was scarce in the colonies.

It happened that by coincidence, one of the dissolved samples of the modified corrosive fell on the hands of a mechanic, who inadvertently mixed up the corrosive with a solvent he was trying to use to clean up his vehicle, which was also glued with the creatures' sticky silk.

The sticky web dissolved in a couple of minutes, leaving the metal intact.

The discovery was followed by an industrial crusade to harvest these creatures' spit. This was no longer a war; this was a discovery of such magnitude that it could flip the markets upside down.

The military campaigns were a success, even to the point where the creatures became an endangered species.
