Introduction, long Show more
#introduction I guess. I'd love to be a cyberutopian. In my drunker moments, I suppose I am. But I've spent the last 20 years as a digital plumber, fixing servers, hotpatching code at 4am to keep some app running until the devs are willing to write maintenance code.
What I know is this. Technology could be a great uplifter. In this epoch, it is mainly a tool of oppression. Companies convince devs to write awful code in the name of a deadline, against the threat of their very survival. Planes fall out of the sky, pacemakers short out, because some dev was up against an impossible deadline and wanted to see their family so they checked in an atrocity. Insurance uses our FOSS code to track our sleep, our heart rate, and revoke health care if it'll save them a dime.
It didn't have to be this way.
Capitalism will kill us all and our code is in the middle of it.
So me? I'm here deciding if I should fix your web app or burn it all down and move to the woods.
