in the great freenode exodus of 2021, all the open-source projects and general nerd hangout channels will flock to...
To me, the main point of this poll is that Gitter was created for exactly this use and nobody will ever use it.
I was talking to one of the founders, Andrew, a few years ago (after being acquired by Gitlab, but before being sold again to Element/Matrix) and he was lamenting about how hard it is to make people show up, no matter how perfect the features were.
You can build it, but they won't come. They'll just scratch on in the obscure, hard-to-use conversation pits because the gravity well is too much to overcome.
@zpojqwfejwfhiunz frankly I voted for my worst fear, because I think it's the most likely
@zpojqwfejwfhiunz Why isn't "IRC" on that list? There's libera, there's oftc.
@alrs because this websight only allows 4 options and that was the 6th thing I thought of
/connect irc.libera.chat, you'll see that the channels are already filling back up. IRC people are not going to move to Discord, ever. That's #normcore chat for non-technical people under 20.
@zpojqwfejwfhiunz Someone will invent yet another new, privacy-invading, centralized chat platform with a glitzy marketing push, and it will be the only thing that has ever existed for all the popular hackers by next Thursday.
@vortex_egg Hello everyone and welcome to Zpojchat, where we chat about all the developers code and internets. Please enjoy this emoji-riddled blog post about how excited we are to get our daily active users count up and don't mind the 12-18 network requests to other domains we make throughout your stay.
@zpojqwfejwfhiunz ...another irc net. That's what I am currently seeing.
I know it’s a dirty word and all, but minus a unicorn here and there, having the best features doesn’t attract people.
@zpojqwfejwfhiunz Matrix is really good. HOPE last year really changed my mind on it.
@email@example.com @firstname.lastname@example.org there was a forum I liked in the early 00s that was awesome because it was really a usenet server with a simple web interface thrown on top. Which meant I just added it as a server on the newsreader I used at the time and only ever used the web interface if I wasn't at my desktop.
Everyone's on Libera.chat already.
@zpojqwfejwfhiunz libera? I think a lot of people will keep using irc.
A bunch of technomancers in the fediverse. Keep it fairly clean please. This arcology is for all who wash up upon it's digital shore.
