climate crisis, extremism

As we move into the coming days, everyone needs to be aware of the turn toward eco-fascism on the global far-right and its increasing normalization into mainstream politics around immigration and ecological solutions internationally.

We are likely to see more green- and ecology-movements merge into fascist belief systems, an increasing prevalence of language and policies that attempt to dehumanize and "other" various peoples, an uptick in doomerist and accelerationist narratives, and disinformation campaigns and information operations that amplifies all of the above.

Our best chance in these times is, and has always been, to support each other. Be careful out there.

@vortex_egg "if you’re a nomad, you’re not an environmentalist. Those who are nomadic … do not care about the environment; they have no homeland." yikes

climate crisis, extremism

@vortex_egg This is my fear for the next few decades. It's not the climate itself that will cause us the most harm, it's our reaction to it which will be far worse. This reaction will be reactionary, primitive, nationalistic and downright cruel as people try to defend what they perceive as theirs.

re: climate crisis, extremism

@teleclimber Yeah, that fear is the primary motivator behind everything I work on right now, and the reason I reorganized my entire life and career to be able to find some way to practically work on forestalling it.

re: climate crisis, extremism

@vortex_egg That's remarkable. Good on you!

Is that why your research is "to understand the relationships between information technologies and collective sense-making (and nonsense-making) "? We as a society may live or die by our ability to make sense of what is happening and reacting rationally. Mass disinfo can make problems completely unmanageable.

re: climate crisis, extremism

@teleclimber

Precisely. Disinfo, radicalization, and even just... how we make sense of complex information and knowledge.

The more I've looked into it the more I've been drawn into investigating the worse side of things. If the situation weren't so dire I would probably be looking at more science-of-science type inquiries.

re: climate crisis, extremism

@teleclimber This reminds me that I haven't updated my website in a while...

re: climate crisis, extremism

@vortex_egg Super important stuff, I am happy more and more people are treating this as a serious problem.

climate crisis extremism vs corona extremism

@vortex_egg so... a slow motion version of what we've seen as pandemic response....
