RIP Nichelle Nichols

Nichelle Nichols passed away yesterday. I think a lot about her legacy. I was introduced to Star Trek by my mom ages ago, and she always sang the praise of diversity to which it spoke, and always pointed at Uhura as a beacon of that hope. Growing up, I also saw first hand the challenges my mother faced as a single mom, educated in a variety of scientific disciplines, as she struggled to find sustaining work for the family.

Not too long ago, I was reading a collection of Star Trek short stories, each with a forward penned by a cast member. Nichelle Nichols' stood out to me. Here is an excerpt:

"I can't help believing that Star Trek was a forerunner in the real world for the inevitable for liberation for anyone who ever felt mis-classified by form or face or color or creed.

We have come a long way since the last of the old voyages, and I think we would not have come so far without them."

sigh Me too, Nichelle, me too.

RIP Nichelle Nichols

@voltur Beautiful words about a sad event, thankyou. I only recently discovered how amazing Star Trek is and it really sounds like it has always been at the forefront of society's growth, which is the best place to be, leading change!

@karithina it's virtually impossible to overstate how important Trek is to the progress of or global society, at every turn since its conception! Glad you got to discover it! It's a treasure.
