Who's ready to get their war on?

1995 USPOL, a past death

@TheGibson

Jerry was only 53 when he died? Damn.

1995 USPOL

also, not sure if @TheGibson meant this as so direct a reference, but in case you're not familiar, this satire of the GW Bush admin hits well

Ok serious question... When people gladly wear over the ear 'gaming' headsets that double the size of their heads, WHY are companies trying to fit AR/VR into glasses instead of of making something like this pic?

1995 USPOL

@feonixrift @thegibson I've used those big VR headsets of the '90s, and they're murder on your neck and balance. You can't stand up and wave your hands around for 4 hours with a 10kg helmet.

Gaming headphones are mostly air (speakers!) and you're sitting down.

@mdhughes
Why... Why would I be standing? Or waving my hands? I want to immerse with my ass firmly in a seat.
@thegibson

1995 USPOL

@feonixrift @thegibson That's not as immersive. If you just see it on screen, and your body or at least hands aren't interacting, you "fall back out" to your body very quickly.

I can focus pretty hard, so I move & react partly with my body in Doom, Minecraft, etc for a few minutes at a time, but being in a rig and an omni treadmill is a whole other world.

I literally want a different thing.
@thegibson

1995 USPOL

@feonixrift @thegibson So strap two 21" CRTs with fresnel lenses to your head, and boom box speakers to your ears, strapped into a chair, and it'll be just like you're a brain in a jar!

I feel like you aren't seeing the use value. But ok. No, I will relax, and sit in a way that does not hurt, while using ergonomically suitable input devices; meanwhile I would like 3D and an adequate field of view to engage with. I am not weird for this.
@thegibson

1995 USPOL

@feonixrift @thegibson I don't, because having worn these things, they need to be lighter than you can possibly think you want them.

If you're moving your head around to look at the environment, you'll be stretching your body awkwardly to try to reach things. You can't really use a keyboard or mouse in a headset that prevents you from even finding it. That leaves controllers strapped to your hands, or motion sensing.

But do a mockup test. Put a heavy box on your head and try it!
