LAPD/social media collection

So… that LAPD story about them collecting social media handles…

Guess who that information gets fed to?

Did you guess?

Was it Palantir?

Because it’s Palantir.

Q: Do you have a twitter account?

A: Well, uh, kind of, but like it's not really twitter, but it's kinda like twitter, but like, everyone can have their own server, if they want, or you can join one - there's lots of choices and you can find one that suits your interests (there are a lot of them), or even have multiple accounts for different things, and instead of "tweets" they're called "toots" and boosts instead of... well, a server is just a computer on the internet that sits and waits for requests from other computers, and that's the great thing about federated...

OK OK OK move it along nerd we don't have time for this...

re: LAPD/social media collection

@float13 @thegibson Hee hee hee hee... I hope I never have to test this.

re: LAPD/social media collection

@drwho @float13 @TheGibson

I suspect its fairly easy to monitor the Fediverse, just create one or more sporadically active users on big instances to get access to the federated and local instance timeline without even needing to follow that many people which would unearth a fair bit of info (follower only posts generally tend to be about peoples personal lives/political views rather than activism...)

re: LAPD/social media collection

@drwho @float13 @TheGibson

I'd be amazed if the European feds as well as BBC Monitoring UK (yes, a part of our state broadcaster!) /aren't/ already monitoring any discussions relating to protests and political situations in Europe and the Middle East...

re: LAPD/social media collection

@vfrmedia @float13 @thegibson They've done it before. They were monitoring Twitter as well as IRC during the Arab Spring.

re: LAPD/social media collection

@drwho @float13 @TheGibson

I used to live in Caversham (a suburb of Reading in SE England) where the BBC Monitoring was based until 2018 and quite a few people there mentioned that they were shifting the focus from monitoring linear TV and radio to the Internet.

A few people on here have complained about IPs from Universities in London agressively scanning Fediverse instances...

re: LAPD/social media collection

@vfrmedia @float13 @thegibson It's even easier by following the RSS feeds from outside. RSS is a pretty niche and arcane thing these days.

re: LAPD/social media collection

@float13 @TheGibson @drwho "do you have a twitter account"

um...

re: LAPD/social media collection, gab

@twitter @thegibson @drwho

- Do you have a twitter account?

- Well, no, but there's this thing called Mastodon....

- What?

- Umm... have you heard of gab?

- Say no more, fine citizen!

A bunch of technomancers in the fediverse. Keep it fairly clean please. This arcology is for all who wash up upon it's digital shore.
