While at the pharmacy today hunting for a pair of tweezers of all things, I changed to see a younger guy prowling around the store. He might have been shadowing me to provider cover as he went on a shoplifting spree.
The guy was set for a spree, anyway. Gym bag slung around the front and open just enough to admit whatever he was grabbing. A pair of spring-loaded cutters in one hand. He was going after all the stuff that's normally kept on locked bars in a pharmacy instead of behind the counter, inside the locked cabinets.
Glance, glance. Reach, snip the plastic, slide into the gym bag. Rinse. Repeat. The guy had his process down.
It took about two minutes of watching the guy to figure out what he was up to. He was grabbing stuff that would make living rough, possibly at one of the encampments that much easier. Stuff for treating cold sores. Antifungal cream. Analgesics and antiinflammatories. Probably other stuff that I didn't see him grab.
I'm fairly sure that he was grabbing stuff for a group of people, probably everyone at the encampment. His bag was certainly big enough to hold enough good for at least a dozen people.
I kept my mouth shut. You don't go on a shoplifting spree like that for fun, you do it because you have to, and because there are people you're trying to help. It wasn't a shoplifting binge, it was a supply run.
I heard the anti-theft alarm go off a few minutes later. It was probably said guy. I hope he got away clean. Folks need that medicine.
It saddens me to the bottoms of my hearts that such a thing is a necessity in this day and age. We can do so much better.
I have a hard time with the theory that just because someone is in a shitty situation, everybody else gets to bend over and take their depredations with a smile.
And if they genuinely are courageous revolutionaries fighting The System the only way that they know how? Then they can deal with the prospects of being martyrs to their convictions.
It's not as if this were a victimless crime.
@jankoekepan I don't think i it's that at all. It's pure survival, just trying to get through.
@drwho Then they'll survive in prison. I don't see how them getting away with it enhances their survival prospects.
A bunch of technomancers in the fediverse. Keep it fairly clean please. This arcology is for all who wash up upon it's digital shore.
