sad Canadian news

This is… heartbreaking. And there were 130 residential schools like this across Canada. What an awful chapter in Canadian history. vancouversun.com/news/local-ne

re: sad Canadian news

@devrandom We're quick to hop on the bandwagon when it comes to denouncing genocide in other countries, but won't denounce our own.

re: sad Canadian news

@conceitedjerk it's so true. It may be different now (I graduated from HS in '95) but we didn't learn about ANY of this in school.

There's a lot to love about Canada but we need to know the bad and ugly too if we're going to learn, improve and do better.

re: sad Canadian news

@devrandom
This is the same story in the USA. Schools do not teach the reality of what we did to Native Americans. I learned by going to museums in Colorado and Arizona as an adult.

re: sad Canadian news

@devrandom Neither did I (Grad '91), although inroads are being made. My daughter's elementary school teaches about Residential Schools (if a little superficially). We plan to educate her more when she's older.

re: sad Canadian news

@conceitedjerk we will definitely be doing that with our kids when they're older. I'm glad they're teaching it now (and I hope they're still teaching it in Alberta by that time).

sad Canadian news, genocide

@devrandom What an atrociously gut-wrenching, absolutely horrid thing to do to children and their families.

re: sad Canadian news, genocide

@shahaan it truly was. I only hope that our education systems will stop sweeping it under the rug and face the truth head-on so we can learn from it and be a better country going forward.

re: sad Canadian news, genocide

@devrandom yeah that and the government needs to make significant, tangible amends and compensation, in addition to formal admission of fault and apology of course
