I swear there was a dudeman a few years back warning of malware doing something similar to jump airgaps, but he was brushed off as being paranoid. I think he was more “I’m infected by malware that is doing this and I have no proof” and not “this attack method is possible and here’s how.”

@ryen If you read it, it's very insensitive. There is so much other noise to contend with that it takes quite a lot of audio to make out a conversation.

Of course, with all the PWM stuff for fans these days, I'm sure it's only a matter of time before someone comes up with a solution that syncs the drive and the fans up such that they don't interfere quite as much.

The one I was thinking of made use of microphones to listen to noisy hard drives, not trying to turn the HDD into an actual microphone!
