Hackers have reverse-engineered AOL 3.0 and announced it on LiveJournal.
#WhatYearIsIt
@Rob_T_Firefly Any ideas why they worked on 3.0 and not a later version?
@Ricardus @Rob_T_Firefly Wasn't 3.0 the last version with boards?
@Rob_T_Firefly This is very cool, but I can't find their project on GitHub. I'm not about to join a discord server to check it out closer.
@clacke AOL the software was the client that signed into AOL's proprietary walled-garden service, which was a whole separate thing from their Internet access functionality (and long predated it.).
@Rob_T_Firefly isn't that network long dead ?
@usul It is, but these folks reverse-engineered the client software to build a new compatible server for the clients to connect to. They're essentially making a new AOL-like network.
@Rob_T_Firefly okay, this is strangely exciting.
@Rob_T_Firefly that is delightful!
