Friendly reminder. Full disk encryption on a server you have no physical access to grants you no security, same for your laptop if you carry it around in sleep mode. FDE protects your data at rest as from a cold boot you need to provide the passphrase. If your box is running the secret is present in memory and can be grabbed by a dedicated attacker.

For the same reason, when approaching border control, TURN OFF your phone, just locking the screen is often not enough.

The how behind the High Sierra root p/w vulnerability. Smoothly done Apple.

My friends.

The internet is our nation-state. They know this, and it threatens their meat-space aspirations. The ruling class has been soundly outed as corrupt and foolish time and again by the free-flow of information.

I am American. I am the spirit that founded this mighty experiment in opportunity and liberty. It is not perfect, for anyone, but it has the capacity to change for the better.

Don't let them have this win. Dictatorships are below us.

Be free, not chained.

For many the tradeoff for Security is Convenience.

For me the tradeoff for Security is Control.

iOS takes control of the device away from the user, but has arguably the best phone security.

Not sure that I like that...

remember kids: if someone offers you cybernetic enhancements they're offering to give you a multilayered, yet horizontal organizational structure that tries to prioritize individual agency and quick feedback loops for more effective management, lame! what you want are cybrenetic enhancements which have lots of wires, blinking lights; are aesthetically yet sloppily grafted to your body.

@thegibson at scale, I can't see the fediverse being less than an amalgam of multiple fediversal branches with n common nodes between any two branches - humanity's shared beliefspace is too big and has too many non-overlapping parts for anything else to happen.

unpopular opinion:

I sympathize with anti-capitalists, but Amazon Same-Day Delivery is a god damned miracle of the modern age.

Just had to explain COM and refcounts to a colleague who was instantiating objects faster than the CLR garbage collector could clean them up. I feel old. At least there will always be a job for aging code monkeys like myself.

To the aspiring script kiddies out there. Don't be dumb, or desperate.

They'll have me find you and build a case.

You'll get expelled or worse.

Don't be dumb... I want to see you in our ranks...

Use your magick for good.

Tim Berners-Lee on the Web: "The system is failing"

theguardian.com/technology/201

<<“I’m still an optimist, but an optimist standing at the top of the hill with a nasty storm blowing in my face, hanging on to a fence,” said the British computer scientist.

“We have to grit our teeth and hang on to the fence and not take it for granted that the web will lead us to wonderful things,” he said.>>
<<“People are being distorted by very finely trained AIs that figure out how to distract them,”>>

Birthday incoming... How many other vintage hackers are out there?

So, uh, code I'm working on:

1. A thing that uses blockchain tech for something OTHER than cryptocurrency. Crazy idea, huh?

2. A web-based MUD/talker codebase using RESTful endpoints for commands. I'm old.

3. Various games.

4. A smart dick pic filter, so women have the option to filter their inbox/eHarmony/Fetlife for unsolicited knobs before being caught unawares.

Mostly working in C# and .NET Core. It's my jam.

Let's play a game, to help some of the newcomers make connections: name 5-7 things that interest you but aren't in your profile, as tags so they are searchable. Then boost this post or repeat its instructions so others know to do the same.
