@GeoffWozniak Hot take: They’ve always been “abusive small-minded bigots” but the intellectual community embraced it when they were punching over at religion instead of at social justice.

@vortex_egg When it first emerged, I think the hope was that they would push for equality. Instead, they pushed for hatred of others.

@GeoffWozniak Imagine looking at all the actual harms that religion has done to marginalized peoples and thinking “The reason this is bad is because it isn’t justifying the hatred with science and logic!”

@vortex_egg It's so ironic how much they reject about trans people when the evidence is overwhelmingly against them.

@GeoffWozniak A corollary is that there is nothing inherent to religious or spiritual ways of understanding that necessarily promotes hatred, and there is nothing about science and logic that makes it inherently immune to this; hatred is just a specific belief content that people like to reproduce using whatever framework they have at hand.

@vortex_egg @GeoffWozniak how long did it take for mild criticism or Christianity to fully turn into Islamophobia?

@GeoffWozniak for me there was no point to the new atheists. i’m an atheist i guess. who cares. the problem is it’s basically a way for teenage boys from the south to have a religious mindset scott not being religious

@libc Yes. It totally turned into its own form of virulant religiousity.

@GeoffWozniak interesting. I only had, briefly, heard of Dawkins before. It's a real shame that they turned out to be be bigoted assholes because I do think that secularism is the way forward.

When you think about it though, this state of affairs was predictable. Who likes to debate and say that they use "logic and science" to push their points more than powerful man?

@fssofdeath @GeoffWozniak Are you familiar with the Big Five personality system? (e.g., projects.fivethirtyeight.com/p ) Most people have an aversion to being disagreeable. Some people, OTOH, are comfortable saying "not X" when everyone else says "X". Sometimes such people are prophets, pointing out important truths; but we shouldn't be surprised when they also hold beliefs that make us uncomfortable.

@fssofdeath @GeoffWozniak Additionally, to the degree modern politics makes people feel uneasy about expressing their beliefs, we should expect the disagreeable to defend dissent.

A bunch of technomancers in the fediverse. Keep it fairly clean please. This arcology is for all who wash up upon it's digital shore.
