You want to know the value of Mastodon over Insta? Posted this on Instagram to the 15k followers I have there, properly tagged. 29 likes, no comments.

Masto? *So* much engagement. So much fun discussion. So much more community.

Numbers don't mean squat if you don't have the follow through. I've never sold a single piece of art through Insta. People on Insta like passively browsing through images and tapping the heart. For an artist, it's a useless audience.

Follow

@welshpixie I believe that Big social media is designed to be passively engaged with by the Algorithm.

If you follow 13,000 people on mastodon, the firehose of posts would be completely overwhelming. It would be unusable.

But on basically any social media, the Algorithm will distill any number of follows/subscriptions/whatever into a comprehensible home feed.

The result is that people don't see "subscribe/follow" as a button that functions as "I want to see all of this person's stuff" but instead "I want to include some of this person's stuff in the background hum of my life while I'm scrolling through a mind-numbing feed to distract myself from my life"

tens of thousands of followers on a Big Social Media equates to fewer eyes on your stuff than hundreds or even dozens of followers on masto, and masto followers engage with other people's stuff actively rather than passively.

@welshpixie @Anarkat I never posted on twitter because it induced way too much anxiety. Hundreds of followers, but the engagement was so small. Really makes you feel like a nobody observer.

@Anarkat "I want to include some of this person's stuff in the background hum of my life while I'm scrolling through a mind-numbing feed to distract myself from my life" is a really interesting and thought provoking way to put it!
